MGF

Mechano growth factor (MGF) can refer to an IGF-1 splice-related product or to a synthetic E-domain peptide. Those are not interchangeable meanings, which is a major source of confusion in claims about muscle repair.

Overview

Product & regulatory status

Research material; identity-specific evidence is essential.

The E-domain question

Researchers are investigating whether an IGF-1 E-domain peptide has biological actions distinct from mature IGF-1. Published experiments disagree about some claimed activities. [1]

What the evidence shows

Positive preclinical finding

A synthetic MGF E-domain peptide reduced cell-death measures and preserved aspects of heart function in a mouse myocardial-infarction experiment. This was not a human muscle-recovery study. [2]

Failed replication of muscle claims

Another research group could not reproduce claimed effects on proliferation or differentiation in human and mouse muscle cells. The study challenges simple claims that MGF reliably activates muscle stem cells. [1]

What remains unknown

The evidence does not establish a human recovery benefit, safe exposure, or equivalence between endogenous IGF variants and synthetic MGF products.

Safety

Clinical safety not answered

Cell and mouse experiments cannot characterize adverse effects of repeated use in people. Uncertainty about the active molecular form adds another limitation. [1]

Do not substitute PEG-MGF evidence

FDA evaluates PEG-MGF as a distinct preparation. Evidence for an MGF fragment cannot establish the safety of a modified PEG-MGF product. [3]

Understanding product quality

Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved finished products. Poor preparation can cause contamination or incorrect strength. A catalog entry or a research paper is not a quality assessment of your product. [4]

When to seek urgent help

Severe allergic symptoms such as trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, or fainting need immediate help. Call 911 or your local emergency number. This is general emergency information, not a complete list of risks for this compound. [5]

A starting point for discussion

This is not a complete list of adverse effects or interactions. Your health history, other medicines, and the exact formulation matter. Missing safety data is not evidence of safety.

Common questions

Why do sources use MGF in different ways?

Some discuss gene expression or an IGF-1 precursor, while others administer a synthetic fragment. Always check what was actually tested.

Questions for your clinician

Does the evidence match my condition and this exact product? What risks or interactions matter for me? How would we assess whether it is helping?
