This entry or formulation may be investigational and may not correspond to an FDA-approved product; safety and efficacy may not have been established. Kairo lists it for identification and record-keeping only.
Overview
Product & regulatory status
Investigational for US wellness use; a compounded preparation is not an FDA-approved immune treatment.
Immune-cell signalling
ETASS measured monocyte HLA-DR expression, an immune-function marker. Changes in this marker did not establish a reliable survival benefit. [1]
What the evidence shows
Earlier sepsis signal
ETASS enrolled 361 patients with severe sepsis in six Chinese ICUs. Mortality was numerically lower with thymosin alpha-1, but the main risk-ratio confidence interval included no benefit. Its single-blind design and borderline findings required confirmation. [1]
Larger trial did not confirm survival benefit
The 2025 TESTS trial analyzed 1,089 patients across 22 Chinese centres. Death by day 28 occurred in 23.4% with treatment and 24.1% with placebo; secondary clinical outcomes also showed no clear benefit. [2]
What remains unknown
Whether any narrowly defined patient subgroup benefits remains unresolved. These ICU studies cannot establish fewer everyday infections, faster recovery from exercise, or longer life.
Safety
Product and immune-reaction concerns
FDA identifies potential immunogenicity and peptide-impurity concerns, with insufficient information to establish safety for proposed compounded uses. [4]
The preparation matters
An investigational or compounded peptide has its own manufacturing and purity uncertainties; a prescription does not make the finished product FDA approved. [3]
Understanding product quality
Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved finished products. Poor preparation can cause contamination or incorrect strength. A catalog entry or a research paper is not a quality assessment of your product. [5]
When to seek urgent help
Severe allergic symptoms such as trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, or fainting need immediate help. Call 911 or your local emergency number. This is general emergency information, not a complete list of risks for this compound. [6]
A starting point for discussion
This is not a complete list of adverse effects or interactions. Your health history, other medicines, and the exact formulation matter. Missing safety data is not evidence of safety.
Common questions
Does an immune-marker improvement mean I will get sick less?
No. A laboratory change needs confirmation against outcomes such as infections, hospitalization or quality of life.
What should I clarify with my clinician?
The precise condition being treated, why the evidence applies to it, and the alternative with the best clinical evidence.
Questions for your clinician
Does the evidence match my condition and this exact product? What risks or interactions matter for me? How would we assess whether it is helping?
