Overview
Product & regulatory status
Vyleesi is FDA approved for the specified HSDD population; research PT-141 products do not inherit that approval.
Central receptor activity
It activates melanocortin receptors; the precise mechanism responsible for the HSDD benefit is not fully established. [1]
What the evidence shows
Desire and distress outcomes
The two 24-week RECONNECT trials studied premenopausal women with acquired, generalized HSDD. Bremelanotide improved questionnaire measures of desire and distress relative to placebo. The benefit was assessed for a defined distressing disorder. [1]
Limits of the indication
The trials did not show a significant difference in the number of satisfying sexual events. The label does not establish efficacy in men, postmenopausal women, or use to enhance sexual performance. [1]
What remains unknown
The approved evidence does not establish how a compounded PT-141 formulation performs, or whether a different cause of low desire will respond.
Safety
Cardiovascular screening
Transient blood-pressure increases and heart-rate reductions occur; uncontrolled hypertension or known cardiovascular disease are contraindications. [1]
Other important effects
Nausea is common; focal skin darkening and delayed gastric emptying can occur. Oral-medication interactions require review. [1]
Brand versus research vial
The approved autoinjector has product-specific evidence. Compounded preparations are not FDA approved or established as equivalent. [2]
Understanding product quality
Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved finished products. Poor preparation can cause contamination or incorrect strength. A catalog entry or a research paper is not a quality assessment of your product. [3]
When to seek urgent help
Severe allergic symptoms such as trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, or fainting need immediate help. Call 911 or your local emergency number. This is general emergency information, not a complete list of risks for this compound. [4]
A starting point for discussion
This is not a complete list of adverse effects or interactions. Your health history, other medicines, and the exact formulation matter. Missing safety data is not evidence of safety.
Common questions
What should be clarified before considering it?
Ask whether symptoms meet the studied diagnosis and whether medications, health conditions or relationship factors better explain them.
What should a meaningful result include?
Agree on the symptom and distress outcome that matters to you, and how your clinician will reassess benefit and adverse effects.
Questions for your clinician
Does the evidence match my condition and this exact product? What risks or interactions matter for me? How would we assess whether it is helping?
