Overview
Product & regulatory status
The small pilot summarized here does not establish safe cosmetic tanning treatment.
Melanocortin activity
The pilot describes Melanotan II as an alpha-MSH analog with strong pigmentation-related activity in laboratory testing. Its range of observed effects makes skin color an incomplete measure of its activity. [1]
What the evidence shows
Three-person pilot
A phase I study enrolled three healthy male volunteers and observed pigmentation changes in two participants. A study of this size cannot reliably establish efficacy or detect uncommon harms. [1]
Effects beyond pigmentation
The investigators also observed nausea, yawning, spontaneous erections, and, in one participant, clinically graded sleepiness and fatigue. These show that effects extend beyond the skin. [1]
What remains unknown
Long-term dermatological risks, product quality, and safety across medical conditions remain unresolved by this pilot.
Safety
Tanning is not protection
The phase I study measured pigmentation and short-term responses. It did not demonstrate that Melanotan II prevents skin cancer or makes ultraviolet exposure safe. [1]
Serious events reported
FDA identifies published reports of prolonged painful erections, severe nervous-system reactions, and melanoma associated with Melanotan II. These reports do not prove causation, but are important safety signals. FDA also flags possible immune reactions and peptide-impurity concerns. [2]
Pilot exposure is not a nasal-product study
The early human pilot used subcutaneous Melanotan II under study supervision. It provides no evidence of equivalent absorption, quality, or safety for tanning sprays or other commercially marketed preparations. [1]
Understanding product quality
Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved finished products. Poor preparation can cause contamination or incorrect strength. A catalog entry or a research paper is not a quality assessment of your product. [3]
When to seek urgent help
Severe allergic symptoms such as trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, or fainting need immediate help. Call 911 or your local emergency number. This is general emergency information, not a complete list of risks for this compound. [4]
A starting point for discussion
This is not a complete list of adverse effects or interactions. Your health history, other medicines, and the exact formulation matter. Missing safety data is not evidence of safety.
Common questions
Can afamelanotide or bremelanotide approval be applied to Melanotan II?
No. Related melanocortin activity does not make these compounds or their products interchangeable.
Questions for your clinician
Does the evidence match my condition and this exact product? What risks or interactions matter for me? How would we assess whether it is helping?
