Overview
Product & regulatory status
FDA-approved injectable prescription products exist. HCG is not approved for weight loss or over-the-counter use.
LH-like activity
HCG has luteinizing-hormone-like action, stimulating gonadal steroid production and reproductive processes when the relevant tissues can respond. [1]
What the evidence shows
The diagnosis matters
Pregnyl is indicated for selected male hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and for ovulation induction in appropriately selected infertile women after gonadotropin treatment. It is not a general treatment for every cause of infertility or low testosterone. [1]
Weight-loss claims are unsupported
FDA states there is no substantial evidence that HCG adds weight loss beyond calorie restriction, redistributes body fat or reduces hunger on restrictive diets. A scale change during such a diet does not establish an HCG effect. [2]
What remains unknown
A testosterone increase does not by itself establish sperm recovery, pregnancy or live birth. Each is a separate outcome that depends on the underlying reproductive condition.
Safety
Fertility-treatment risks
Ovarian hyperstimulation, multiple pregnancy and thromboembolic complications can occur in relevant fertility-treatment settings. These require specialist selection and monitoring. [1]
Systemic adverse effects
Hypersensitivity, fluid retention and gynecomastia are among labeled concerns; the risks depend on the patient and the treatment context. [1]
Product distinction
Prescription injections and products marketed as homeopathic drops or sprays are not equivalent. FDA has not approved HCG weight-loss products. [2]
Understanding product quality
Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved finished products. Poor preparation can cause contamination or incorrect strength. A catalog entry or a research paper is not a quality assessment of your product. [3]
When to seek urgent help
Severe allergic symptoms such as trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, or fainting need immediate help. Call 911 or your local emergency number. This is general emergency information, not a complete list of risks for this compound. [4]
A starting point for discussion
This is not a complete list of adverse effects or interactions. Your health history, other medicines, and the exact formulation matter. Missing safety data is not evidence of safety.
Common questions
Is HCG a fat-loss drug?
No. Its approved reproductive indications do not validate HCG diet or metabolism-reset claims.
What should fertility follow-up measure?
Discuss the outcome appropriate to the diagnosis rather than treating a serum testosterone value as proof of fertility.
Questions for your clinician
Does the evidence match my condition and this exact product? What risks or interactions matter for me? How would we assess whether it is helping?
