Overview

Product & regulatory status

Evidence in stroke care should not be repurposed as proof of general cognitive enhancement.

What the evidence shows

Large acute-stroke study

CASTA enrolled 1,070 patients with acute ischemic stroke. Its combined confirmatory functional endpoint did not significantly differ between Cerebrolysin and placebo. Post-hoc subgroup trends do not overturn that primary finding. [1]

Rehabilitation is a different question

The exploratory CARS trial reported better arm-function recovery alongside early rehabilitation than placebo. Its authors called for confirmation in a larger trial. Differences in timing, background therapy, and endpoints matter when comparing this with CASTA. [2]

What remains unknown

Which patients might benefit, how durable improvements are, and how findings compare with established rehabilitation remain questions for condition-specific review.

Safety

Trial safety cannot be generalized to self-treatment

CASTA monitored adverse events during hospital-based treatment and follow-up. This does not validate unsupervised administration, healthy-person use, or substitution for time-sensitive stroke care. [1]

Match the preparation

The clinical trials concern the named Cerebrolysin preparation. Results should not be assumed to apply to another peptide mixture simply because it is described as neurotrophic. [1]

Understanding product quality

Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved finished products. Poor preparation can cause contamination or incorrect strength. A catalog entry or a research paper is not a quality assessment of your product. [3]

When to seek urgent help

Severe allergic symptoms such as trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, or fainting need immediate help. Call 911 or your local emergency number. This is general emergency information, not a complete list of risks for this compound. [4]

A starting point for discussion

This is not a complete list of adverse effects or interactions. Your health history, other medicines, and the exact formulation matter. Missing safety data is not evidence of safety.

Common questions

Do these findings mean it improves focus in healthy people?

No. A trial in stroke survivors addresses recovery after brain injury, not ordinary concentration or memory in healthy adults.

Questions for your clinician

Does the evidence match my condition and this exact product? What risks or interactions matter for me? How would we assess whether it is helping?
